Here is a list of fun things to do locally no matter your age or location! And while most of these activities aren’t free, they’ll cost you a lot less money than flight and hotel expenses.

Enjoy many “happy hours”

You could easily enjoy a drink and an appetizer for about $10 if you choose wisely. Not only is it a fun way to hang out with friends (heck, or go alone and chat up the bartender and the regulars), but it’s an inexpensive way to change your scenery, if even just for an hour or two. And if you have kids in tow, many kid-friendly restaurants host happy hours, too!

Step out of your comfort zone

Sky diving, hot air ballooning, downhill skiing, bungee jumping, free diving, white water rafting, and mountain climbing are all popular choices. For more ideas read 50 ways to be a daredevil »

Have a Netflix marathon

Or you could just cuddle up on the couch with the family and have a Gilmore Girls or Star Wars marathon with a bucket of popcorn and M&Ms. It’s not that much different than laying on the beach with a margarita, right? Plus, nothing beats good ol’ quality time with the fam.

Get cultured and educated

Simply Google your city and choose places and activities you’d never otherwise do. It’s a smart way to occupy your time, and you may even find a new passion!

Submit to the staycation

If you can afford it, spend one night at a local resort with a friend or partner and indulge in the whirlpool and breakfast in bed. Or if you need a little family fun, get a hotel with an awesome indoor pool or waterpark. You deserve it!
