Looking for a luscious cocktail to serve the Thanksgiving crowd while they wait for turkey dinner to be served? This succulent pear sour, inspired by Wolfgang Puck, goes down easy and is reason enough to give thanks for the holiday season. What is a pear sour, you ask? Despite sounding like a drink you’d rather pass up, this cocktail is part of the traditional family of mixed drinks called “sours.” Basic sours are made with a base liquor, lemon or lime juice (which contributes the sourness) and a sweet component. Our lushly-flavored pear sour blends pear brandy, pear nectar, fresh lemon juice and simple syrup. The result is a holiday-perfect cocktail that bursts in your mouth with big pear flavor, lemon tartness and simple syrup sweetness. ALSO TRY: The Dublintini cocktail is an easy holiday twist to the classic martini This pear sour also has an ingredient that may be unfamiliar to you: an egg white. Wait, what? If you’re not familiar mixology, discovering an egg white in the ingredients list may shock (or even repulse?) you. Take heart! The egg white serves an important purpose. Adding it to cocktails enriches the texture of your drinks without adding excess calories nor eggy flavor. Phew! The egg white gives your drink richer mouthfeel and leaves just a hint of foam on top. The froth is garnish without the extra effort. Because salmonella contamination can be a concern, make sure the egg you use is ultra fresh and clean, and, if possible, pasteurized. DIY simple syrup: Forget the bottled sweeteners labeled “simple syrup” in the drink aisle. Certainly they are convenient buy, but they are also pricey for what they are. Simple syrup is just water and sugar — and you can easily make it yourself. To make simple syrup, combine one cup water and one cup granulated sugar in a saucepan over high heat. Bring this mixture to a boil and simmer for three minutes or until the sugar crystals are completely dissolved. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the simple syrup cool completely. Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to one month. Can we drink already? Yes, we can!
